Bio: Nillumbik Emus Orienteering Club History An orienteering club was started at Eltham College in 1975. Fred Veler, the physical and outdoor education teacher at the College, was instrumental in forming this group. The Eltham College Club changed its name to Nillumbik in 1980 in order to broaden its membership base. Aboriginal for “Shallow or Dead Earth” - the club draws most of its members from the north and north east suburbs of Melbourne. Training and competitions occasionally occurs at the You Yang Regional Park Branch Rd, Little River at the Werribee Plains 60km southwest of Melbourne.

This club has many active younger families with children and many of its juniors have represented their state in National competitions. Club’s main interest is Bush Orienteering; members compete in all aspects of the sport in Bush, Park and Street, Ski, Mountain Bike Orienteering and Rogaining. The club organises 4 - 5 Bush O Events a year plus Street/parkland O events and has been the strongest bush-orienteering club in Victoria for six of the last eight years.

Membership is broadly based with members located across Melbourne and regional areas of Victoria. The club caters for people with disabilities, all ages, abilities and families are very welcome to join and often club newsletter is emailed out to members. Expert coaching and mentoring is available for newcomers. Nillumbik Emus organises many events and with social gatherings a regular highlight. Members can be recognised at events by their distinguishing uniform with the Emu logo.
