With the completion of both Winter Olympic and Paralympic events; the success of many of the athletes especially from host nation Russia winning most medals to place Russia on top of the medal tally in both events shows the advantage of competing in your own country. Our Australian athletes did well winning the same amount of medals as they have done in the past two Winter Olympics. As we all know Australia is not a Winter Olympic sports nation though, we have our ski resorts in states of Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and to a lesser extent the Australian Capital Territory; the facilities and resources available for our Winter Olympic athletes is not as well advanced as our European, North American and Northeast Asian counterparts.

Our improvements will come when more Australians start to know and also appreciate Winter Olympic sports and be more involved. Going to one of our ice skating rinks around Australia like what we have in Melbourne (Dock Lands) and in the suburb of Oakleigh or our ski resorts at Mt Buller, Mt Hothem or Falls Creek in Victoria will surly help improve our chances if the resources are there to provide facilities for our winter athletes and for Australians in general to value winter sports. Also, in Melbourne in the suburb of Cheltenham there is an indoor ski centre called ‘SkyCity’ where you can learn the skills of a snow boarder or skier and also have fun in a safe indoor environment with professional guidance on hand for all ages and a number of disabilities. Additionally, we must give our congratulations to our Winter Paralympic athletes winning two bronze medals and our Winter Olympic athletes for winning silver and two bronze medals.

With these achievements it signifies that with better money and training facilities Australia can improve on these successes and be one of the power nations of the Winter Olympic Games. Furthermore, financing athletes in winter, summer or other sports like this year with the Soccer World Cup and Commonwealth Games our successes can endure with better financing and resources to create a stable supply of world class athletes and more importantly for the general society in Australia being pro-active and improving on their health and fitness.
